    loki-sama Says:

A couple questions though. The H264 version, what’s the resolution going to be? Will it be the same as the AVI (704×396), or will it be larger? With the quality of the AVI being what it is (very high), I hope you’ll do the H264 version in a higher resolution, but that’s just me. 8)

    Bokkoman Says:

The h264 version will be in HD, since the source was HDTV. resolution will be 1280×720. Dunno what the encoder will do, else we still release it that way :0

    thanks for being fans :)

    Serpent Says:

In the subs, at 7:52 in this episode, there is a sub-comment that states that “sama” is less formal and more personal than “dono”. This is a mistake, as “sama” depicts a high-status position, or in other words a great respect for the person “sama” is addressed to.For example “Kami-sama” is used often when refering to God. I know it’s not much, but it can confuse some of the anime-viewing public

Look great! Thanks for subbing and please continue subbing this anime.

    Bokkoman Says:

Thanks Serpent, i will look at it, since there is another error aswell with a line that disappears too early.

    yahyagara Says:

    that’s what we want arigtuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  15. 15
    Pithlit Says:

Serpent: common misconception. Read up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dono before you get confused on it too much. Yes, “sama” is used very often while “dono” isn’t. If you’d read the note on “dono” you’d understand. “Dono” is pretty much only used when addressing an aristocrat. “Sama” is used all over the place (including addressing friends that you respect – which is very far from addressing God). That comment may confuse someone with a short attention span.

    Balh Says:

Are you guys translating from Chinese? Just curious since the script is pretty “loose” at times. I suggest you ask the translator to check out the manga beforehand since “Shigurui” is riddled with historical terms and expressions that can easily get lost in translation.

Concerning the “sama vs dono” issue, it depends on which historical period you’re referring to. In some periods, “sama” could be more polite than “dono.” In some others, it was the other way round. In “Shigurui,” “dono” tends to be used to address someone in the same social position. It’s a bit complicated, but maybe you could think of “dono” as the archaic form of “san” (at least in this case).

  18. 18
    pablo212 Says:

Balh: you are right, the TL is loose because alot of the terms and such were outside of our translators grasp which is why I had to do a heavy TLc of it and I probably missed things, sorry about that, we will try to improve it next episode and no this is directly from Japanese. btw dono and sama is two terms that we will look into again but in this case according to our translators grandfather it is dono as high status and sama as same level but I will reconfirm this.

    Awesome work, guys.
Mind if I use it as base for the russian version?

  20. 20
    pablo212 Says:

Actually we already have a russian one translated and almost ready for release, send me an email at flomp.fansubs@gmail.com and we can talk

  21. 21
    Balh Says:

    Dono vs. Sama

The point here is that “sama” indicates submission while “dono” does not, at least in Shigurui’s historical context, hence sama > dono. A man would address a woman with “dono” since that’s the standard polite form to address another person. A woman, on the hand, usually uses “sama” if she speaks with a man. A servant would use “dono” when talking to another servant, but he will likely use “sama” if it’s his master or someone who has a higher social rank than him.
Hope that clears up the confusion.

  22. 22
    Bokkoman Says:

Sometimes it’s just hard to translate japanese, since there is no english way to translate it. We’ll just add -dono and -sama to the names if they are spoken and you guys figure out what it means :p

  23. 23
    Mitsukai Says:

Yo…thanks a lot for this new series!! Loved the 1st episode and cant wait to see the second and the others after that!!

Thanks a lot Flomp for this release!!

  24. 24
    Pithlit Says:

Balh: nope… that causes more confusion. “Dono” is used in ‘organisations’ with clearly defined and strict protocol (or hierarchical structure if you want) such as governments (hence aristocracy in Japan), military… even police. To quote you: “A servant would use “dono” when talking to another servant, but he will likely use “sama” if it’s his master or someone who has a higher social rank than him.” Clearly a wrong statement. A subordinate in military would address his/her superiors with name-rank or possibly (if he/she wants to emphasise his/her respect for the supperior officer) name-rank-dono. _Never_ “sama”.

Now, back to the point in case, “sama” is always used with a personal subnote (when one wishes to point out apreciation of someone else, be it God or friend or someone else that the person feels attached to in any way or form). Hence the note in the sub. I think I explained when and how “dono” is used.

If anyone wishes to discuss this further, feel free to pm me on IRC.

  25. 25
    Balh Says:

@Pithlit: Sorry, I have to disagree with you on this point. “Dono” isn’t only restricted to “organizations.” (Fujiki uses “Mie-dono” in the first episode, how does that make sense to you?) In fact, it’s used all over the place since, as I said, it’s the standard form of address in ancient Japan. Your understanding is based on how “dono” is being used _today_

  26. 26
    Ferdinand Says:

Is this the first episode? Isn’t this the preview episode?

  27. 27
    Adjudo Says:

The picture looks great, and this seems to have quite the storyline. Please continue! Great subs!

  28. 28
    pablo212 Says:

ferdinand: this eps matches eps 1 EXACTLY but maybe we will do a v2…even if there is no need :)

  29. 29
    Pithlit Says:

Balh: Samurai were part of japanese army. Fujiki is a samurai. Mie is his teachers daughter. Which makes her his “Lady”, hence -dono. He, on the other hand, is Mie’s subordinate. Obviously there’s more to the relationship since she uses sama on him.

So the Wikipedia link I posted above wasn’t trustworthy enough? Will http://www.jref.com/language/japanese_suffixes.shtml satisfy you? I just can’t find a reference that would back up your explanation of things. I can find many that back up mine. Like I said… find me on IRC or something so we can flame eachother. I’ve given enough references here for people to make their mind about it.
