why? because a stand alone dvd player does NOT (as of yet…) recognize .mkv.
And it’s not that great to watch a movie on pc.
just on the couch is – my idea – to watch a flick

I basically use convertxtodvd and it just makes it easier for me to play it in my ps3… because once I make a dvd I just ripp it myself and play it in… tedious but life isn’t easy.. hehe

I’m thinking this is pointless. Atleast for ps3 or x360 support.

You’re wasting time and re-encoding video, losing quality, for no raeson.

You can use any of the free muxing software out there (mp4box/tsmux) to remux to m2ts or mp4. It will take about 3 minutes total, and will play natively on ps3 and x360- without reducing quality at all (lossless). You will need to remux to avchd if you want subs.

Btw- Mplayer is free video player for pc that is much superior to VLC.

I use Videora to convert videos for my iphone/ipod.
It’s free http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPhone-3G/
and has two modes, pro and easy. So you can change all of the conversion settings you want, create a 10 second clip (option in program) and see if it worked out.

I’ve taken a few pointers from this article, thanks! I’ve been converting .MKVs to .AVIs to watch in X-Box Media Centre, and after much experimenting – and remembering the golden rule of trying to keep things simple – I have settled on using on using a free prog called MediaCoder ( http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ – which has all the functionality of AviDemux but is much less tempremental and a bit more user-friendly) to get a plain Video and Audio track to an AVI file, then using MKVExtractGUI from MKVToolnix to rip the subtitles to an .ass file which you give exactly the same filename as your new AVI, put in the same folder, and then head off to watch in XBMC, which will take care of the rest automatically.
It is a crying shame to lose the stylings of the subtitles, but XBMC – just like VLC – only supports plain text subs. :’(

Confetti, you said that Videolan VLC player plays .mkv format perfectly fine? Big mistake. You probably have never seen mkv formats with any other player such as media player classic or zoom player from the CCCP codec pack. But once you do, you will realize your mistake. VLC strips all text formatting that the fansubbers put their blood and sweat into for softsub subtitles. I suggest your change your player immediately.

You can download a program named SUPER it has a few ads in it but it works great, you can choose subtitle streams, audio streams etc with it.

The reason people convert MKV’s is to watch on stand-alone dvd p/divx layers or xbox’s / ps3’s etc.One some smart person releases a stand-alone mkv player, then no more converting! =)

yes you’re right about my confusion about the versions.

but vdub has no mkv support and vdubmods mkv support is shit (because it is very old)

avidemux is as you say not staple, i.e. if you cut videos without reencoding (copy streams) it fucks up the first seconds till a I-Frame comes.
but avidemux mkv support is way better,
If you just want to reencode files and/or add subs to it is avidemux2 just the best.
and btw im on Linux so Vdub is a bit shitty to use (the previews dont get shown on my pc because of my shitty ati gfx)
there simply is no good encoding tool for Linux that has a GUI
